As their campuses have grown, so has their staff, and with 75 team members, Executive Pastor of Ministries, Graceann Hector, was finding it hard to develop every individual well.
“With multiplying in different locations and the central team unable to be everywhere, we were trying to replicate culture and values across all campuses. We want every campus to feel like The Block Church.” - Graceann Hector, Executive Pastor of Ministries at TBC
Consistency is one of the most important components of people development.
TBC launches a campus every year, at their current rate of growth, and Graceann, along with church leadership, was finding it difficult to maintain consistency when it came to culture and staff development.
“We only get 6-12 months with each leader before we launch them into leadership. It all has to do with how we develop those leaders. We were asking ourselves how we can develop everybody and make sure we keep the culture, as well.” - Graceann Hector
The executive leaders at TBC began examining their leadership pipeline and were finding gaps in leadership. Graceann noted that it all kept coming back to a leadership development problem. She found that there was a lack of consistency in how each location pastor was leading their staff and volunteers. That’s when Graceann turned to Leadr.
Leadr helps set the tone for intentional leadership with 1:1 meetings.
“We had several campus pastors and the way each of them led was really organic and different. We could get away with that for a while, but getting to 5 and 6 locations, I realized we needed a system for leadership development that was congruent across the board. 1:1 meetings kept coming back up in the language we were developing.” - Graceann Hector
Graceann met with some of the younger leaders at the church and asked how they were developing their volunteers and what their meetings were like. She found that the answers were so varied.
“If we can find a system where we’re at least following the same formula within 1:1’s, we can achieve so much. That’s why Leadr perked my interest, because of the [format for] 1:1 meetings.” - Graceann Hector
Through utilizing Leadr herself, Graceann found that the Leadr software was easy to use, that she could give it to any of her leaders, no matter their age or experience level. Leadr software gave TBC “a bone structure to having a valuable 1:1 meeting,” and helped with alignment for meetings and staff development.
Since implementing Leadr, TBC staff has found that 1:1 meetings are easier, specifically because of the shared agenda. Graceann maintained that the software isn’t intimidating to use and has eliminated the task-driven mindset that her staff had before.
Leadr has transformed the task-driven style of leadership into a person-first style of leadership at The Block Church.
“[One of the things] that really made the difference is having the care card of someone’s personality. We’ve seen our relational equity grow so much because of that.” - Graceann Hector
Graceann shared that implementing Leadr helped TBC staff focus on what’s really important, like meeting their goals, instead of focusing on the tasks at hand and who’s performing them.
When asked what she’d say to other leaders who are considering giving Leadr a try, Graceann maintained that Leadr has been essential to helping the TBC team to reach their goals while also building relational equity.
